Alfie: Why no Second Generation Martians?

[In response to “LIVE Streaming Steam Radio, or satellite?…”]

Ah! The memories you awaken!

Fortunately I only had to suffer the vagaries of “Fab208″ from Christmas 1963 (when I got my little Benkson radio) until Caroline kicked off in April ’64 little more than 30 miles away!

I also avidly followed the space race (not it must be said from it’s beginnings – I was only 4 in 1957) from Laika the Soviet pooch and the Mercury Chimps through the stupidly curtailed Apollo project to [the current half-arsed orbital messing about of] the present day.

We really should be well into our second generation of Martian colonists and well on the way out of the solar system by now! But that’s bloody politicians for you – no idea of the priorities!

By the way, I think the Russian version (or should that be “wersion”?) of Eva von Braun was named Sergei Korolev. No-one had even heard of him until the 1990s, presumably because in the People’s Paradise successful individuals weren’t allowed.

Little more than 48 kilometres away! You lucky thing! In Plymouth (where I was 1964-1974) we could only listen to the off-Essex free radio stations in the hours of darkness…

I hesitate to suggest that the wartime Braun family of Germany were all in it for a big bang!

But then good taste and I were ever strangers so I will!
