Viru$ fixer$ create them in fir$t place?

In regard to the advice from WordPress by Matt…

Tough note to communicate today: Automattic had a low-level (root) break-in to several of our servers, and potentially anything on those servers could have been revealed.

We have been diligently reviewing logs and records about the break-in to determine the extent of the information exposed, and re-securing avenues used to gain access. We presume our source code was exposed and copied.

While much of our code is Open Source, there are sensitive bits of our and our partners’ code. Beyond that, however, it appears information disclosed was limited.

…don’t panic.

A lot of this is geeks testing security as in “are my programming skills as good as this company’s best?”

For the most part they are people who understand code. If computers had not been invented they would be brilliant at Maths or understand French and German and Italian etc.

It’s the lower end of these bastards who know how to construct code who create the viruses that we all pay a lot of money to avoid. And who can say if the companies that flog this protection software are not involved in creating the odd virus to help stimulate sales?

So far as the development of the internet is concerned, it is still the Wild West on the timeline of its history.
