The James Bond movie Tomorrow Never Dies is of course fiction however the bad guy, the main antagonist in this picture is a Media Baron by the name of Elliot Carver who uses his empire to try and take over the world. He is portrayed in the picture by Welsh actor Jonathan Pryce.

Screenwriter Bruce Feirstein was upfront at the time of production by announcing that he had modelled the character on Robert Maxwell, but Bond Fans saw the Carver character as a satirical take on the life of  Rupert Murdoch.

Another take could have been newspaper magnate and publisher William Randolph Hearst, interesting then that as listeners called the BBC World Service programme “Have Your Say” (big in west africa) to comment on the “News of the World” fiasco.

Two callers made the Elliot Carver connection in reverse. Asking the shows host if they could remember the film they went on to suggest that it was Murdoch whose vanity and obsession with power and the manipulation of politicians around the world had swayed him in portraying himself in the same mould as Carver.

In the end Bond terminates Carver’s ambitions and empire. Who in the Con-Dems will be given the Walther  PPK?

The latest nonsense doing the rounds is that Robert Maxwell was killed by Mossad. Here’s my response: http://dasteepsspeaks.blogspot.com/2011/10/maxed-out.html
